Straight edges are almost a necessity to adjust the depth of cut on your jointer. Straight Edge – Good | Better | Best – Straight edges are used for drawing lines, checking the flatness of a board or hand plane. It is also a perfect companion to set the angle on a sliding T-bevel. Protractor – Good | Better | Best – Protractors find and draw angles. Digital models don’t require a protractor. The sliding T-bevel is excellent for transferring those angles to other tools like the blade of your table saw. Sliding T-Bevel – Good | Better | Best – Most often used in combination with a protractor, a sliding T-bevel lets you mark angles. Therefore I keep it in my shop apron so I have it on me at all times while working. The 6″ model is the one I reach for most often. If you can only afford one, get the 12″ combination square. The 4 piece sets include a center finding attachment for round stock and a protractor head. It is also a depth gauge and a router bit height gauge and marks lines down the length of a board. It is a tri-square measuring both 90 and 45 degrees. Check out our article on tape measure tips and tricks.ġ2″ Combination Square – Good | Better | Best – The combination square is one of the most useful woodworking measuring tools ever made. This facilitates better repeatability when laying out multiple parts of the same size. You can mark various parts of your project right on the tape. A story pole tape measure has a blank area you can write on with a pencil. Many of the best tape measures come in metric, imperial (fractions), or a combination of both on the same tool. Most woodworkers prefer tape measures but some prefer folding rules to do the majority of their measuring. Tape Measure – Good | Better | Best – This one is kind of obvious. Scratch Awl – Good | Better | Best – An awl is a woodworker’s best friend due to its many useful functions such as starting screws, accurately starting a hole for drilling, and scribing lines. 0.5mm mechanical pencils only work on very smooth wood or paper without breaking. 0.9mm lead works well on rough lumber because the added thickness prevents the lead from breaking. At the same time, it is not so thin it keeps breaking. The lead in 0.7mm mechanical pencils is thin enough to give you useful lines. Miss out on any of these and you cost yourself time-possibly even money.Ġ.5-0.9mm Mechanical Pencil or Wooden Pencil – Good | Better | Best – Mechanical pencils are great because they always create a sharp, crisp line. The following woodworking marking tools and measuring tools represent the foundational tools every woodworker needs to have in their possession. It is critical to remove version 5.33 of CCleaner software, since the malware can hide on a system for up to a year, noted Talos. Users should wipe their entire computers - removing and reinstalling everything - and restore files and data from a pre-Augbackup. Today, we are going to disclose new facts about the incident that we received since the last public update. That is, despite the fact that CCleaner is a consumer product, the purpose of the attack was not to attack consumers and their data instead, the CCleaner customers were used to gain access to corporate networks of select large enterprises. As published in our previous blog posts, analysis of the CnC server showed that the incident was in fact an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attack, targeting specific high-tech and telecommunications companies. We would like to update our customers and the general public on the latest findings regarding the investigation of the recent CCleaner security incident. Once the malware was installed, attackers were able to gain access to a user’s computer and other connected systems to steal sensitive personal data and/or credentials for online banking and other online activities.Įarlier this week (September 25), Avast issued the following information in a blog… However, many consumers remain at risk - and will remain at risk even after updating the latest CCleaner software. Some systems already protected by other anti-malware software such as VIPRE are likely to be unaffected. Avast corrected the problem, removed the old software and created a new version of CCleaner. On September 13, 2017, Cisco Talos notified Avast that it could begin corrective action. The CCleaner attack was discovered by Cisco Talos, Cisco’s cybersecurity team. This impressive figure, the release noted, equates to more than one download for every three people on earth and that CCleaner downloads now top 20 million per month. In a press release last November, Piriform stated that CCleaner, had reached 2 billion downloads and counting, making it one of the most popular pieces of software worldwide. Ironically, Piriform is owned by Avast, a leading provider of anti-malware software. This type of attack typically succeeds because the bad guys exploit the trust relationship between a manufacturer or supplier and a customer. KineMaster works hard to increase the capability of its users to achieve astonishing results in their videos. Other apps make it difficult to remove an image or video clip’s background, but in KineMaster the solution is easy! It doesn’t require time or special equipment to achieve, just one tap of the Magic Remover. The Magic Remover is a game changer for editors! Prior to the new updated version, KineMaster already included a Chroma Key tool to remove solid color backgrounds. Magic Remover cleanly and completely removes backgrounds around people in images and video layers with just a tap! The recently-updated video editing app KineMaster released the Magic Remover tool for its more than 42 million monthly active users around the globe. As it’s free (as long as you don’t mind the watermarking and lower resolution exports), it’s definitely worth checking out.Magic Remover cuts out backgrounds around people in images and video layers with just a tap. You can find yourself creating complex projects with ease. KineMaster is a surprisingly powerful video editing app for your mobile device, which is well designed so all tools never feel out of reach. To get rid of that watermark, gain access to higher resolution exports, and a wealth of premium effects, you need to purchase a subscription. That’s the price you pay for having access to all these tools for free. You’ll find that top right of your completed video features a small “Made with KINEMASTER” watermark. Set the Frame Rate and the Quality you’re after, and tap on Export. KineMaster offers you a choice of resolutions from 360P to 4K (although 1080P and 4K are only accessible with a subscription). Once you’ve finished your project, it’s time to export it. Before you shell out any money though, you can preview each effect to make sure it’s right for your project, and your wallet. A vast number of them are labelled premium and can be acquired through a subscription service. Many of them are free and you can simply tap on their download button to get them. That store grants you access to additional effects. If you need more effects, filters, transitions, etc, you can grab them all from the KineMaster Asset Store (most become free with a subscription - with new ones added every week) (Image credit: KineMaster) The creation of them is remarkably easy and you can tell the developers have worked hard on every facet of this editing application to offer powerful features in an intuitive and compact way. You’ve got a slider to control the speed of any given clip.Īny clip not on the Primary Timeline can be altered with the use of keyframes. You have access to a good number of tools, like colour filters, cropping, rotation, opacity, and there’s even a chroma key tool. The Secondary Timelines don’t have this restriction and you can add anything there wherever you need it - as long as it’s over a Primary Timeline clip.ĭo note that the Primary Timeline sets the project’s duration - playback will stop once the playhead reaches the end of the last clip on that layer irrespective of whether there is more footage on other layers beyond that. This is useful and allows you to build an edit fast. The first layer is known as the Primary Timeline and KineMaster doesn’t allow gaps in it: delete one clip and any others to its right move to the left until they join with the rest of the edit. Overlays (like text and stickers for instance) are less computationally intensive and KineMaster appears to let you have as many of those as you need. Editingĭepending on the power of your device, KineMaster allows you to work on multiple layers of video. It’s a very intuitive process which allows you to pack a lot of power in the small phone screen. For instance, tap on some video footage in your timeline to get editing tools, or choose a text layer to gain access to the font selection, colour and formatting tools. Features: While GarageBand’s nature as a pack-in may dissuade you from considering it as a professional audio suite, we’d recommend giving it a try. In a Strategist article published in October last year, I discussed the workforce needed before Australia can own its first SSN. The date we should be looking at is when we might have a fully operational, sovereign SSN capability that can be deployed to defend Australia. The media and political focus on when Australia might commission its first SSN-be it new or a leased second-hand submarine-is misplaced. I think it’s an essential, if challenging, transition that should have started years ago, but didn’t. I should affirm my support for Australia’s transition to nuclear-propelled attack submarines as my detailed study, delivered to the Department of Defence in 2013, and my public advocacy implies. In the UK in 2010 a parliamentary committee found the Astute program to be almost five years late and 53% over budget. That lesson was learned the hard way in the Collins program, where we ended up with five prototypes and rectification was protracted and much more expensive that it otherwise would have been. We should expect delays and cost increases, particularly in the first of class which is essentially a prototype requiring a couple of years to evaluate and produce design fixes to be incorporated in the following submarines. This approach could ultimately meet the aim of a sovereign Australian SSN capability but it will take a significant amount of time and come with the risks all new-design submarines face. A new design would enable updated reactor and other features to be installed. This makes sense as the UK production line will close with the completion of the seventh Astute-class submarine and the US Virginia class is not well suited to Australia’s requirements. UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has hinted at an alternative approach: a new SSN incorporating the requirements of the AUKUS partners that would start construction in the mid-2030s. All this during a period of heightened strategic risk. The plan to ensure a continuous, sovereign, operational submarine capability under this strategy is not obvious and is yet to be explained, but what’s certain is it will take decades to achieve. Jumping into one or two nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) that we won’t own as they will likely be leased, dependent on foreign crews, supervision, support and an overseas supply chain, none of which we control does not meet the aim of having a sovereign capability.ĪSPI’s Marcus Hellyer describes this as the ‘ damn the torpedoes’ approach. It’s what we have now, with six Collins-class boats largely dependent on Australian supply chains, with more than 90% of sustainment done by local companies-and the submarines are Australian manned and controlled. I suggest that two deployable submarines is the minimum Australia requires in the challenging times we face. Taking such a path would be a significant strategic mistake if it also trashes Australia’s existing sovereign, operational submarine capability. ‘Optimal’ here could be interpreted as ‘quickest’. The published aim of the nuclear-powered submarine taskforce is ‘ to advise government on the optimal pathway to acquiring a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines for Australia’. Their critical importance has been emphasised in multiple defence white papers, most notably since 2009 when an increase from 6 to 12 submarines was agreed. Submarines provide a unique, asymmetrical capability, giving the Australian government a range of options not offered by other platforms. |
